football sunday

being recently out of school, grad school that is, i find myself with little disposible income to my name at the end of the month. though i have a full-time job that pays the bills, when it comes time for the lap of luxury, i find myself with a tuna fish sandwich and a dr. pepper. better than some, but still no cable TV. you see, my selection when it comes to entertainment is limited, though i am not complaining on this subject as I am a driven writer and musician so the majority of the time I can entertain myself. however, a perk that I am missing in my life is the guarantee of NFL football on sunday. let me clarify here, i do get a game, but when i use the word "a" I am meaning 1. you see, i have about four channels on the old boob-tube. one of them is not FOX and/or ESPN. this means that on those weeks that CBS does not carry two games, I am left with three hours of dead air. you would think that in a city like Chicago there would be better reception given out, but this is a myth and I am living the truth. My friends who live about 2 miles away can get FOX as well as an undefined Korean station, which my television also lacks. but why do I care and even more, why do you?

because there is excitement and entertainment in football on sunday, even in college football on saturday. my professor of drama taught me that there would be no better drama than that of a saturday match between the razorbacks of Arkansas and, well, just about anyone in his opinion. So, as I sought my degree in, well, drama, I was forced to live with the reality that I would never have 70,000 screaming fans on the edge of their seats for one of my plays. a lesser man would have probably given up at the first mention of this defeat, but i plugged away and continue to plug away at my writing career knowing that to succeed as a writer does not require a rabid following, but like minded individuals whose aim is to create art.

a production of my play, FAUSTUS, an adaptation of the original English story of Dr. Johann Faustus is coming up in January and I hope everyone who reads this will come out and support the show. you can get more info here. The show is a co-production between GroundUp Theatre and LiveWire Theater and involves many like minded individuals whose aim is to create art.

so it's possible that in the coming months as rehearsals get more intense and my nerves get more shot, it won't phase me that i only get the guarantee of one football game on sunday. and the fact that I am getting produced in Chicago will negate the reality of greater drama happening in the sports arena because theater is the art, not drama. drama is part of the pulse, there is no doubt in that, but the heart, the mass, is theatre and that is something no amount of cable stations will give you. TV outputs drama after drama, but even the reality shows that try to depict real life are no comparison to live theater with living breathing people creating an experience for its audience whether it's 70,000 or 7 people.

go out and support theater. art is there for you. all you have to do is attend.
